Women’s homelessness is a national crisis deeply linked to family violence, with almost 60,000 women across Australia without a safe place to call home each night. On the Mornington Peninsula alone, hundreds of women are sleeping rough, in cars, or couch surfing. Numbers that continue to rise amid a severe shortage of affordable housing in the region.
Back in March, I attended a powerful International Women’s Day hosted by Women in Business Mornington Peninsula, featuring inspiring speakers like Berry Liberman, Gab Banay, and Josie Jones. It was there I reconnected with Cate Darcy (The Be There Group) and Alex McCabe (Kip & Co), who shared with me details about their newly formed Non-for-Profit, Moonah House, which will be the first WCS Women’s Community Shelter in Victoria, with the aim of providing secure, safe and nurturing crisis accommodation for up to 70 guests within the first year, including 30 women and 40 children, totalling over 3400 bed nights.
Moonah House will also provide wraparound support such as counselling, life skills training, and access to community support networks to those at risk, enabling guests to regain their independence and confidence. As well as implement WCS’s educational prevention programs within the community and develop a blueprint for expanding WCS’s services across Victoria to support more women and children in need.
While the organisation had been provided with a logo, they were in need of assistance with their digital and fundraising strategy.
And a couple of weeks ago we helped softly launch their website, strategically designed with the women it serves front of mind. We focused on creating a safe, calming digital space making it easy to access important resources for women coming from a place of strife, where they could seek help and information. The design purposely considered elements such as soft rounded edges, a natural and soothing colour palette, and beautifully calming photographs of the region donated by local photographer, Elizabeth Clancy. The site also includes a discreet ‘Quick Exit’ button for users at risk.
At Five Creative we believe in using our skills to support causes that make a real difference. And partnering with Moonah House aligned with our values of meaningful impact and community support, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping amplify the work they do.
